In order to read this work, authored by Georg Ellinger (not "Essinger"), one must be able to read German and also to decipher the older German print style, known as "Fraktur." If one is willing to do so, however, it is well worth it. Ellinger's biography represents an important re-evaluation of Hoffmann, who previously had been widely dismissed as little more than a hack scribbler of Gothic horror tales; today, Hoffmann is almost universally recognized as one of the most important German Romantic writers, and an author of world rank - and Ellinger's text can claim at least some of the responsibility for this fortunate change of attitude toward Hoffmann.Product details
